Art & About Sydney :: 23 September - 23 October - Get into i!

This month sees the start of Art & About in Sydney. A month long celebration where our beautiful city becomes an exciting and colorful canvas filled with a variety of events, public art displays and outdoor exhibitions. The focus this year is on after hours events, seeing places like the Museum of Sydney, Customs House, The State Library and the Art Gallery of NSW all opening their doors until late and hosting their own events. A wonderful way to enjoy the city during a busy work week. So grab some mates, have a drink and walk around the city enjoying such events as:

:: Tsunami 1.26. by Janet Echelman::

Location: George Street Sydney (Outside Townhall)

Dates: 23 September - 23 October

Cost: FREE

Remember this post back in July? Well can you believe the time is finally here! Janet Echelman brings her "Tsunami 1.26 installation to Sydney. Janet's piece drew inspiration from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s announcement that the February 2010 Chile earthquake shortened the length of the earth’s day by 1.26 microseconds by slightly redistributing the earth’s mass.

Dates: 23 September - 23 October

Cost: FREE

Selected artists and collectives were invited to install artworks in the City's southern laneways and temporarily transform unused spaces into creative canvases to catch the attention and imagination of passersby.

:: Sydney Life ::

Location: Hyde Park

Dates: 23 September - 23 October

Cost: FREE

Ten years ago, the first Sydney Life exhibition captured our city in a series of striking large-scale photographic images, on show in the beautiful central walkway of Hyde Park North. A decade later, Sydney Life is a much-loved annual event bringing friends and families to delight in images that look beyond the iconic. This year, 22 finalists bring their own unique vision of Sydney to this stunning exhibition.

What is a Festival without a FREE FESTIVAL LAUNCH event? Well come and see for your self as all this and much more kicks off off on FRIDAY 23 SEPTEMBER 5pm to 9pm in Martin Place. Also if you get a chance, visit the Design After Dusk Artists Markets which will be on at the State Library of NSW from 5pm till Midnight.

Janet Echelman - The rediscovery of wonder.....

On our recent trip to San Francisco we sat in awe underneath these beautiful, ethereal installations located in Terminal 2 (T2). Simple in their material (fishing nets) softening the stark space that can often be found in most airports.

I fell in love with the idea of something as basic and ancient as a fishing net being used to fill space.

Researching further I found this wonderful (and recent) video from TED (hands down my favourite video site) of the artist Janet Echelman discussing the progression her art has taken. Being rejected by several art colleges Janet sought to become an artist on her own. Starting off with painting she was soon invited to India for an exhibition where (by a beautiful twist of fate) she discovered the art of net making whilst observing local fishermen. So began her journey with large scale installations.

I have recently read that the City of Sydney Art and About festival (September 23 - October 23) will be presenting some of Janet's installations. Very exciting!!

Art and About - Portland May 2011 - Happy snaps from our trip week 3

Week 3 saw us visiting our most anticipated and researched/read about city - Portland, Oregon. Armed with a list of must check out places we set about walking this very green, clean city. Seeing a city adopt initiatives to encourage people to look after themselves and their environment was very inspiring. Cycle ways, garbage bins in the city that were more like mini recycling stations, atriums and wind turbines in/atop office buildings etc. Portland also has a big push towards sustainable, local and seasonal eating. Fresh produce from the city grown by locals in the city included greens, berries and fruits. Along with many micro-breweries, and our favorite hangout for food - Wholefoods - Portland really made us happy.

On the handmade side....oh my....I was in crafty heaven :-) Small multi purpose shops like Tender Loving Empire that sold not only handmade goods (tshirts, jewelry, home wares etc) but also music created by local bands- some of them still on cassette! Or Crafty Wonderland where I felt the need to pick up and touch everything in that store...and do some big shopping. Oh Portland.....I could go on and on......

Art and About - Seattle May 2011 - Happy snaps from our trip week 2

Week 2 saw us spend a very fascinating week in Seattle. Where we got to visit the Boeing factory to learn all about the future of flight, La Marzocco where I got to hang our for a few hours with some super friendly coffee folk (whilst Martino got to talk all things coffee) as well as climbing to the top of the Space Needle for a great view of the city and surrounding areas.
