London Design Festival :: 14 - 23 September 2012

This year marks the 10th London Design Festival. One of the events we hope to visit is 'Enter the Imaginerium' which is a workshop space located within the Fabrications gallery/shop.

Fabrications is a shop/gallery and studio space located in Hackney, East London that is dedicated to upcycling and eco design. It has helped to promote and sell the work of over 200 local artists as well as held crafty workshops. As part of London Design 2012 they will be holding various workshops as well as inviting everyone to visit their space. Some of the upcycled creations on offer include:

Upcycled Shirt and Tie made into cushions:

Also their popular Rethink Rubbish kits. These kits are full of carefully selected materials and instructions to create such awesomeness as knitted mobile phone cases (made from plastic bags), fascinators, sustainable gift wrapping and these beautiful brooches!

For more information check out their online shop here.

Lots of Cardboard and 9 years worth of imagination:: Caine's Arcade

Have you seen it yet? Caine's Cardboard Arcade. Its heartwarming and will make you smile. Made us smile. The imagination and resourcefulness of Caine is pure magic. Caine cuts, folds and sticks cardboard together to build THE greatest arcade ever. All done whilst hanging out with his dad at his Auto Parts shop. Caine created the games, tickets, the ticket booth and even designed his t-shirt proudly bearing the words "Caine's Arcade" on the back and "Staff" at the front. Caine was set. All he needed was customers.

What happens next will make you smile.....and take you back to your childhood. A time where everything felt possible and achievable.  Something we may (sometimes) forget as adults.......

Intel Visual Life - The Sartorialist

I love reading and learning about modern artists. Of course if I can find a video about them on YouTube even better! Imagine my delight when I found the video below. I think one of the most wonderful things the Internet has made possible is the sharing of everyday life. Watching an artist at work whether it be at a sewing machine, behind the lens of a camera, or in the kitchen is a real gift to all of us. Seeing a person just like you and me doing something they love is a great way to fire up the creativity. To them its like breathing, and that is where the gift is for us. What these wonderful people teach us is that no matter what you do, if you do it with love in your heart and fire in your belly, it will always look effortless to others.

Here is my favorite photographer at work Scott Schuman - The Sartorialist

Ole! Ole! Olek...

Polish born NYC based artist Olek has done it this time.....taken her magical super duper crochet skills straight to the bull.....the Wall Street Bull that is!

This very imaginative artist has crocheted ladders, tents, cars, windows - entire rooms even! Check out her cool video below and enjoy the music. Very clever. To think her main reason for crocheting was so that she could do two things at once - watch movies and make art.

Sculptors, fashion designers, wig and shoemakers - The making of Lady Gaga

Amazingly talented artists come together to make the latest Madame Tussauds wax figure.  Lady Gaga would have been a fun one to be part of I think.  A great video featuring some of the processes involved in making her eyes, wig, shoes and even her teeth. Fascinating.
