AM Gallery Exhibition - Georgina Pollard :: Through Line

We recently attended the 2nd exhibition held at the brand new  AM Gallery located in Newtown.

"Through Line"  by Georgina Pollard.

With her abstract works, Georgina studies the character of paint and how it relates to the act of painting.   How paint folds, drips, weaves and hangs.

Seeing paint have a life of its own was very interesting to me.  Cleverly woven into colourful patterns reminiscent of the vinyl beach chairs our family had in the 80's.  It really took me back :-)

For more photos or to keep up to date with the happenings at the gallery visit the  AM Gallery website  or become a fan on their Facebook page.

Drop in and visit Maria and Stephen, the gallery owners.  A lovely couple dreaming big and making things happen.

Google Art Project - Art Appreciation without leaving home....

Van Gogh Museum - Amsterdam 2008

Want to view a Van Gogh over breakfast?   Study the brushstrokes of a Rembrandt whilst doing your laundry?  Admire Boticelli's Birth of Venus sitting back on a Friday night in your comfy chair, with your favorite drink in hand?  Well now you can with the wonder that is Art Project powered by Google.

For over 18 months Google has been busy collaborating with 17 galleries and museums around the world to offer virtual tours of each space. Using Google's Street View technology you can now virtually stand in front of various works of art and view them in high resolution  - some images in 1 gigapixel (that is 1 billion pixels!).   This allows you to clearly see brushstrokes, colour build up even cracks in the paint. The detail of these works is nothing short of astounding.

Art now becomes accessible to those that for many reasons are not able to visit these galleries and see these great art works for themselves. A wonderful thing.

Here is a great video on how Google accomplished this incredible task

Enjoy!!

Art and About - St Peters, Sydney

Following on from our 2011 quest to visit more art spaces  this weekend we dropped by May Lane located in St Peters.    May Lane is an outdoor gallery space which allows street artists to show off their talents including graffiti, tags, paste ups and other forms of urban art .  You can read more about how and why the lane was started here.

Sometimes controversial, not always popular with the locals but not all art ever is.   Here are a few of our favorite ones:

Location:  May Lane, St Peters Sydney
How to get there:  The lane is located within walking distance from St Peters train station and King Street Newtown.

Art and About- Sydney from A to Z

In an effort to uncover more of the art that is being produced everyday in our city, Martino and I are on a quest to visit galleries and art spaces in (and around) Sydney on a regular basis.   Last Sunday we kicked off our adventures with a visit to Brooklyn (no -not the one that requires a big plane ride) which is located on the picturesque Hawskebury River, about 1 hour north of Sydney.

Whilst there we visited  The Edge Art Space which had a group show titled "Berowra to Brooklyn" featuring local artists inspired by the surroundings of the majestic Hawkesbury.  It was beautiful to see the Australian bush, river life and the local flora feature in many of the artists works.

One of the artists who participated in the show wrote the following Artist's Statement which I really loved:

"If I'd known that I would enjoy painting so much, I would never have waited till my late fifties to buy brushes, canvas and oil paint and start the process of experimenting with said items"

A great lesson for us all.

Audrey Kawasaki - "Tangled" - Outre Gallery - Sydney

Mayakashi by Audrey Kawasaki

oil and graphite on wood panel 12"x12"

I first saw Audrey Kawasaki's art in one of Martino's Juxtapose magazines.  My first thought was if Martino ever gets a tattoo, it has to look like this'.......very weird as he doesnt have any tattoos and not really expressed any interest in having any either.    Audrey's art is beautiful and features her female (and some androgynous males) in very alluring, sometimes dark and sensual poses.  For me the faces, particularly the eyes are what makes her pieces.   Finally she will be having her first major solo exhibition in Australia and we are off to check it out.  Very much looking forward to it......maybe even stop by the tattoo place afterwards!

See Audrey's work at the Outré Gallery(Shop 7, 285a Crown Street, Surry Hills) from October 29 until November 15.....

Project 365 - Thinking about doing it again.....

Today I visited a local gallery during my lunch break to see the photo exhibition by Andrew Gunsberg (or Andrew G who hosted Australian Idol) who in 2009 took one photo everyday - all self portraits.   The exhibition showcased photos of Andrew in different countries (incl Spain, Israel, Australia, USA) and doing every day things like jogging or driving,  or even funny things like drying his underwear with a hair dryer after his luggage was lost! (been there....ha ha).   It was a really cool exhibition with lots of great photos worth checking out.  If you cannot get to the exhibition he has them available to view on Flickr.

In 2009 I took on a similar project to take one photo every day.  The idea was that by looking for something to photograph each day, I would become more aware of my surroundings and this would in turn help me to be a little more confident in my creativity and as a bonus expand my crafty talents.  So I pretty much took ownership of our trusty little camera and carried it everywhere, everyday with me.  Being a small digital camera this was not hard at all.   I was not too concerned with how well the photo was taken (some of my favourite shots are blurry or dark) instead I focused on the subject.  Looking for colour combinations, patterns and textures.  Apart from photographing people I also took lots of food, floral, insect, craft materials and sky shots.  I definitely learned more about the space I travel in every day and how amazing and colourful it really is.

So this evening I sat with a nice cuppa and looked back on the photos from 2009.  What a treat it has been!  A wonderful  visual diary of what my eyes found creatively inspiring.  It also reminded me of how much I enjoyed the project, especially sharing it with lots of colleagues, family and friends.  Looking to do it again one day soon.  Here are a few of my favorite pictures:

Feb 10: After a rainy summer day, this little guy took the plunge and ventured outdoors
March 2 :  Signed up for a jewelry making class. This was my first completed project.  It took 2 attempts (and some tears) to get it to look like this.  I learned a lot about myself in that class.
May 15:   Sunset over Erko
July 29:  A visit to my local nursery.  These little beauties caught my eye.
November 18:  Renovations of our apartment begin.  I picked this light fitting purely because every time I visited the light shop, I couldn't stop touching it.
December 22 - Going out for breakfast - one of our favorite things to do.
